As scientists have learned more about the nature of light and its positive effects on the body, new techniques and devices have been developed to use light as part of the healing process. This is referred to as low-level laser therapy or Phototherapy. In much the same way that the cells of plants respond to the sun through photosynthesis, Phototherapy uses light energy to stimulate the body’s cells; accelerating the natural body’s healing processes.
What is Phototherapy?
Phototherapy is a highly effective light or low-level laser treatment that offers patients faster healing from injuries and reduced pain, without the use of drugs or invasive surgeries. Originally developed over 35 years ago, this remarkable process uses light to penetrate the skin’s surface and underlying tissues to stimulate the body’s natural repair process, safely and easily.
What are the treatments like?
Phototherapy devices are positioned directly on the skin while gentle pressure is applied. Generally there is no discomfort or sensation associated with the treatments. Therapeutic light energy is produced by low level lasers or super luminous diodes, to penetrate the skin safely and effectively, with no known side effects. Patients are relaxed and comfortable during the sessions, while one or more areas can be treated simultaneously. As well, Phototherapy sessions are fast for added convenience.
Is Phototherapy safe?
More than 2,500 published papers and hundreds of scientific studies have proven that Phototherapy is a safe, and highly effective way to treat a variety of conditions. Phototherapy has also gone through a stringent regulatory process, and has been deemed safe by the US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and Health Canada. At this time there are no known published articles on significant negative side effects.
